Top Gear, renamed Top Racer for licensing reasons, was a hit arcade racing series by Gremlin for the SNES in the 90s – and it’s making a comeback. As part of QUByte and Piko’s endearing efforts to bring back all the classics from yesteryear, the Top Racer Collection will feature the three 16-bit entries in the series: Top Gear, Top Gear 2, and Top Gear 3000.
But that, as they say on television shopping channels, ain’t all! You’ll get a bonus fourth game featuring crossover content from Aquiris’ uber-popular Horizon Chase Turbo, which was obviously heavily inspired by the original Top Gear games. The titles will be updated with online play, which is always a nice addition for retro releases like this.

Great to see retro releases like this... Although I wonder how they'll hold up.
shame they can't get Lotus Turbo challenge on there too!
@purplemoose lotus turbo challenge 2 on the amiga was so good at the time, very fond memories of playing that for hours.
@purplemoose yes! That was an awesome game!
@hi_drnick what you mean hold up? they held up for 3 decades already lol
Top Gear holds up very well. Was fantastic on the SNES.
@Balosi @purplemoose Played more of the original Lotus on Amiga than the excellent sequel (did play the latter on a buddy's ST though), good times!👍
Quick google says these weren't done by Magnetic Fields, but borrowed remixed music & graphically similar by Lotus publisher Gremlin apparently.🤔
Reminds me how the Switch got an Outrun game but alas PS Owners haven't seen anything since what,Outrun 2006? Agree I'd love to see the Lotus series but guessing licensing would make it unlikely.
This and the Neo Geo compilation are the two I'm looking forward to from QUByte.
@Robocod 2009, Outrun Online Arcade. Sega need to sort it out and give us more Outrun. Just edit the cars enough to get around the Ferrari licensing.
I was a big fan of Top Gear Rally on the N64, but never played any of the older SNES titles. This might be worth a go if there’s more to the games than nostalgia.
The first two do hold up well; I’ve played them to death since they got rereleased on the Evercade. Never played TR3000 and as I already have played and enjoyed Horizon Chase Turbo, I can’t see me getting this collection, despite enjoying 3/4 of the games.
I have great memories of playing the Lotus games on my Amiga, mainly the third one as I spent far too long creating races on the level designer, which ended up on console for Lotus 2 I think?
Happy times 😊
@Robocod. Is that the same Magnetic Fields with Stephin Merritt of 69 Love Songs? I knew that he had done the music for Coraline on Broadway but did not expect him to do video game soundtracks. Although his early albums were almost all synthesizer, so maybe.
Well, this just made my day. Love the Top Gear games so this will be a day one buy for me.
@Stevemalkpus No,Magnetic Fields was the dev studio that made the Lotus racing games on Amiga,(& other formats of the era). They made numerous 8bit & 16bit home computer games, though probably most remembered for Lotus despite their previous other hits.

Barry Leitch was the composer & also involved in the Top Gear games apparently with remixed music from Lotus. Whilst Gremlin Graphics who were the publisher,(later aka Gremlin Interactive),apparently reused some of the track designs according to wiki of Lotus in Top Gear.

I am assuming they changed the name because of the TV series.
@Toypop I doubt they will be a remake use Horizon Chase engine as that's a different developer then the Top Gear series.
I'd be happy if someone re-released Monaco GP for PS4. And Pole Position!! Fun racing!! But sadly all we get is bad NFS games and GT7 is getting as dated as the aforementioned games.
@Robocod outrun is odd. The last `new` release was a ps3 game I think, but that got pulled from sale pretty quickly.
The general belief is the ferrari license, but that doesn't stop sega releasing the original game regularly, so maybe that's not the problem.
Played the hell outta these racers back in the day and they still are fun today! I’ll be grabbing this on all systems!
